After he relays his story, several others around him repeat it nearly verbatim with the same concluding sentence: â€Å"I come to spend the carnival at Venice† (Voltaire, 1960, p. 84). In the company of several satirical monarchs (two from Poland, one from England and one from Corsica), they listen to the Honest Turk as he describes his outlandish story and mock him through their satire. Yet, the Honest Turk, despite presumably having a vast estate, lives a simple, meagre and virtuous life. Pillars that became central to one of the key concepts developed by Voltaire throughout the book: the cultivation of one’s own garden, symbolizing, in effect, the trustworthiness that comes from hard work and bearing the fruits of one’s own labour and surplus adulterated by nepotism and inheritance. However, the idea that hard work and honesty factored into merit was not something that most monarchs in Europe were willing to accept, until the wave of political upheavals in Europe began overthrowing centuries of established political dynasties, beginning in France. That idea that hard work and honesty is apolitical is also somewhat problematic, however, because it ignores the fact that the Enlightenment thought, developed by Voltaire and others was steadfastly against aristocratic rule, despite the fact that what emerged was a form of Enlighte nment that allowed monarchies to nevertheless remain in power, will fostering an environment of free speech, increased social and political tolerance and the right to private property. The principal inspiration behind Enlightened monarchies like that fostered by Catherine the Great was nothing short of a watered-down version of what the Honest Turk embodied. Though in some respects, administrations were changed. One figure who exemplifies the real-life notion of the Enlightened monarch, perhaps more so than any other, is Catherine the Great, who took over the Russian throne in 1762. Catherine the Great not only gave asylum to several Enlightenment thinkers during her over 3-decade long reign, but also was in frequent correspondence with Voltaire through letters where they expressed mutual sympathy with each other. Catherine’s ‘enlightened despotism’ made fanfare with renegade thinkers such as Voltaire, whose pointed criticism of the French monarchy, their greed and corruption, found a sympathetic ear in Catherine, whose rule over a barely modernized Russia prompted her to enact, reforms designed at integrating with an Enlightened Europe, a top priority. In turn, many of her qualities are arguably present in the Honest Turk: someone who is reformist, willing to accept change and modification of social and political systems, free from religious doctrine, open, inclusive, ha rdworking and dedicated, qualities which certainly Voltaire saw in Catherine as well. As such, the Honest Turk is someone who does not evade his past, his inheritance, or his fortune, but rather is someone who sees value in the merit, bounty and freedom of hard work on a personal and individual level. Legalization Of Drungs The legalization of drugs has always been a problem in the United States. Some people agree with the Idea of legalizing drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and many others. These people argue that with the legalization of these drugs the crime rate and other social problems would reduce. While their opponent argue that the legalization of drugs would only add to the already high crime rates, and many social problems we have in the United States. Both sides both have very good arguments as to why drugs should or should not be legalized in the United States. The battle between the government date back as early as the year 1914. This is the year in which the government passed the Harrison Narcotic act. This act asked for the punishment of those who were illegally in possession and use of marijuana. Penalties for the sale, and or, possession of illegal drugs were established by the Drug Abuse Control Amendments of 1965. Surprisingly enough, through all of these drug laws, marijuana remained legal until 1970. Even though most drugs were now illegal in the Untied States, more than fourteen million Americans used drugs at least once a month in the late 1980's. What would be some of the benefits from the legalization of drugs? Well, for the actual user there would be numerous benefits from the legalization of such drugs as marijuana. First would be the price of the drugs. Drug costs would dramatically decrease by ninety percent if they were made legal. Also the availability of them would increase. Heroine, at one time was close to becoming legal, would have been available at any corner market, and even treated like aspirin without any restrictions. Along with the benefits, comes' the obvious dangers that would rise from the legalization of drugs. One of the first considerations that comes to a person's mind when thinking of the possible dangers drugs is the thought of children being able to obtain marijuana, and other such drugs. If it is easy for the under aged to obtain such things as alcohol and cigarettes, wouldn't it be just as easy to come in contact with these new legal drugs? What many adults don't consider is the fact that mant teenagers and young children already have acceess to these illegal drugs. ?Today, just 11% of Americans report seeing drugs available where they live: After legalization, there could be a place to purchase drugs in every neighborhood.? Once again this information is hard to believe. Although drugs are illegal, drugs can be found anywhere in the United States, and they are most definitely already in just about every neighborhood. There are also fears of the crime rate increasing in result of the legalization of drugs. The U.S. Department of Justice reports that criminals seem to commit six times more homicides, four times assaults, and almost one and a half times as many robberies under the influence of drugs. The main reason of these high statistics is the result of there criminals trying to obtain money in order to buy the drugs, but if the drugs were legal and in turn had a lower price, maybe not as many crimes would take place. Many other countries have legalized drugs inside their boundaries. A few of their places include European countries such as; Switzerland, England, the Netherlands, and Italy. In the Netherlands, anyone over the age of seventeen is able to visit marijuana ?coffee shop? and pick a type of marijuana like a little kid picks a flavor of ice cream. The use of pot by adolescents the Netherlands has raised by nearly 200%. The possession of small amounts of drugs in Italy has not been considered a crime since 1975. Today, Italy has 300,000 heroin addicts, the highest rate of heroin addiction in all of Europe. Mexico is another country with related drug problems. In Mexico there is no serious enforcement against drug distribution. Mexico is the major source of marijuana. The United States' State Department has stated that Mexico ?does not have a serious drug problem?. So if less strict laws against drugs seem to be working better than completely outlawing them, shouldn't the U.S. try to lay off of the drug users

American Civil War and Union Army Essay American Civil War and Union Army Essay The Battle of Gettysburg First things first, the Battle of Gettysburg was the SECOND invasion of the North. And it only happened because General Lee forced General Hooker to retreat at the battle of Chancellorsville, and it made him think he could divide Pennsylvania and split the Union in two. In a way, he didn’t get his way. The battle began on July 1, 1862. Confederate troops were on the search for shoes and were met by Union troops in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. By the end of the first day of battle, 45,000 troops were engaged in battle and the Union troops were able to create and maintain defensive lines along Cemetery Ridge and hills known as Little Round Top and Big Round Top. F.Y.I: GENERAL MEADE WAS IN CHARGE OF THE UNION ARMY AT THIS TIME. HE WAS ALSO A LITTLE BABY, MEANING HE NEVER â€Å"WENT ON THE OFFENSIVE.† Little Round Top: The Ticking Clock Maneuver July 2, 1862 Colonel Chamberlain was in charge of protecting a hill known as Little Round Top. He ordered his men to move the cannons onto the hillside. He then split up the troops he had into groups. A regiment behind him, battalion to the right, and a brigade to the left. (For those who don’t know how many soldiers are in a Regiment, there are 1,ooo. There are 2 Regiments in a Brigade. There are anywhere from 300 to 1,200 men in a Battalion.) The Rebels attacked repeatedly and left the Union soldiers tired and gravely injured if they didn’t end up dying on the battle field. Even though the Union forces were spread thin, Colonel Chamberlain managed to defend Little Round Top using a maneuver where his troops â€Å"went on the offensive.† (This was after a couple of days of watching his men die so he decided that they would run towards the Rebels and see what would happen†¦. Brilliant strategy isn’t it?) They shot the Rebels from the top of the hill day one and two of the battle and nearing the end, his troops ran screaming down the hill towards the Rebels and killed those who didn’t retreat in time. This was one of the few times the Union army â€Å"went on the offense.† Cemetery Ridge: Pickett's Charge Maneuver July 3, 1862 Lieutenant General Longstreet was in charge of breaking up General Meade’s forces. First things first, General Longstreet did not want to make this charge. Whenever General Longstreet was asked whether or not he wanted his men to charge, he answered with a nod because it was what General Lee told him to do. (And one does not go against the General’s orders!) When his men charged forward, there was no real plan. They were not as organized as the Union army, but they always won the battles because they were much better shots than those city boys (Union soldiers). So they marched forward into the Union’s cannon range and knew that they would die. They fought for a cause that they truly believed in. Even though the Union forces were much bigger than the Rebels’, the Rebels never stopped coming forward. The Outcome: Devastation and Death For BOTH Sides This was the bloodiest battle of the civil war. About 93,000 Union soldiers were alive and on their way or at Gettysburg on July 1, 1862. Around 3,000 were killed, 14,000 (at least) were wounded, and 5,000 were missing or captured. About 71,000 Rebel soldiers were alive on their search for shoes in Pennsylvania on July 1, 1862. Around 4,000 were killed, 19,000 (at least) were wounded, and 5,000 were missing or captured. One thing that everyone forgot, was the fact that the battle site, where everyone was burying the fallen soldiers, belonged to farmers. So the United States bought the land and turned it into an official cemetery. The Gettysburg Address On November 19, 1863 a â€Å"dedication ceremony† took place at Gettysburg (which hereafter none to be Gettysburg Cemetery). These kinds of confrontation between Mick add the caretaker is the order of the day in the inner-city London, symbolizing broken Britain. Mick’s wish was achieved (passive) when he was sentenced (passive) for 14 months after being charged (passive) with robberies in east London. According to Mick, the Feltham turned to be the best place he has ever been. Three meals in a day, TV, private bedroom (existential) and other luxuries are part of what you enjoy in the jail. The impression to the young people outside is that, they want to be jailed as they think it is an honour, and it is even better than school. The mentality in the jail among the youth is that one does not have to hustle for a living as everything is provided. For the rest of boys in the streets and outside there, going to Feltham is a key part in their lives. Moreover, they find it a substitute to their homes and the chaotic life associated to the homes. The main question arising from this perception is ‘if the prisons are no longer deterrent, then what could be to the young ones in the society. Lewis refers to Mick as a head case Mick. This is after saving him from the young gang that hand threatened to him. Lewis got Mick into a plumbing course hoping to turn him round but to no avail. Despite the situation Mick talks of other gangs made of youth such as the Black hawk boys and Asian gang. However, his group is the most feared d in east London. Despite the police being aware of his group, they are not successful in hunting them down as there is no particular group leader. Mick’s day is entailed with taking care of the drug business. He gets the staff from the supplier, and takes to his customers, later in the day he enjoys the evening with his girlfriend. Despite dong the drugs, Mick claims it is easy to sell wind, but it does not make good money as cocaine and heroin do. Despite the rotten life in drugs, Mick has a dream of a good big house and cars and hopes to one day get a job, but he is not sure of the best time to legit. A two year feud with another boy leaves Mick with a gashed lip. Despite respect for Lewis, Mick plans to make it even with the boy by revenging. He likens the life to a video game you either die early or you play to the end. The incident makes Mick always walk around armed with a weapon (9mm Glock pistol). The jail is not solving the purpose intended, and Lewis looks for an alternative to save the at-risk boys in London. He looks forward to coming up with 1000 ‘Capital Men’ to save the boys. However, the menace has greatly the black families which the politicians have all feared to address. After a period of 5years in drugs and city crimes, Mick is tired of it now. However, trig who has all time watched his mentor Mick, says, â€Å"I dint fear Feltham if Mick made it, I can also handle it†. At the end, Mick says â€Å"Young people are like blind people crossing the highway. They cannot be able to tell what coming down road and instead he to me for guidance. Felth am was a good experience but as one gets older, you comprehend there are better places to go on holiday. I can tell Trig that, but I highly doubt he would even listen to me.† (Direct speech).
